iPod installation and retrofit programming experience
#1
Just had my new '07 550i retrofitted with the iPod kit. I bought the kit and installed myself (10 mins tops, the hardest part was to disconnect the two fiber optic cables). The service mgr insisted that the car be flashed with the latest software update, but I told them no, just do the retrofit programming. After 16 mins, the iPod/CD changer sub-menu showed up but all greyed out. I was disappointed and the service mgr went on to say "I told you so, you should have let us flash your software, blah blah...". I let the car shut down for 15 mins, came back to open the door, turned on the radio, and low and behold, iPod was there.
The trick is, let the car shut down for 15 mins after the programming, and it should work. And remember, you don't need the software upgrade to retrofit it (unless your E60 had the really old software version).
By the way, I have version 24.xxx (something) in mine.

But believe me, I was standing there next to the tech and watched him going through the retrofit menu. No software upgrades required besides the iPod retrofit.

both cables were in plain view to me too. The power one was obvious. It was loose, nothing tied to it.
The fibre optic one was harder, as i had downloaded a guide from this site that said the optics were clipped to the top of the glove box frame. The big loop of dense tape didnt look right, so i had to check if the optic was indeed where the instructions were telling me. After the hassle of needlessly taking the box out to find nothing, I decided the loop must be the candidate. It was hard to tell if it was a loop originally, as it felt like it was going somewhere, trapped behind the fuse box area. Once you know what it is, and you get through the furry tape, its easy.
