There were a couple of threads about this topic in the parts forum, but I do not recall ever seeing a final answer so I am trying again here . . .
When playing either a playlist or album, all of the songs are originally displayed. But if you turn off the car and then restart it, only the song actually playing is displayed. Does a software upgrade fix this problem and if so, what version do you need to upgrade to?

Can't really help Rob! I don't have this issue. Upon restart, I get the full Playlist or Album list. However, on several occasions I have taken the iPod while traveling and I usually have the iPod showing the current song playing. When I plug it back in to the car, it will have the same song display and not the full list. Guess that is not very helpful but it seems that maybe the setting on the iPod is picked up by the iDrive somehow though I'm not sure if that's possible!

The issue seems to affect some, but not others. Do you know your build date and/or software version? Maybe I can back into the answer.

The car (MY2008 550) was built in early October '07. Don't know the software version, is there a way to tell from the build date alone, such as what version was in use at that time?

FYI, my July '07 build date 550i has the problem with it reverting to "now playing" after every restart, so I've been hoping to find a fix.
If CD doesn't chime in after a few days, I know where else online that he "lives" but he's out of town and kind of offline at the moment.

Yes I was one of the members who had created a thread about this topic. I still haven't received any replies that have solved the issue. The only theory is that it might be a specific version of the software.
