Ipod connection

Hi, new to the forum firdt post. I have read a couple of threads regarding this but not clear on the answer really. I have a 2006 530d with Pro-Logic 7, I would like to connect my i-pod but not sure of what is required - can I go y cable connection only? If so how do I connect it and to where, also where is the best y-cable supplier if this is an option?
Or
Do I need a full CD changer replacement module such as Dension? If so what is considered the best all round value.
Sorry if this is all repeats but you guys get into some really deep answers with a lot of cryptic abbreviations.
