good example... years ago, when i was in highschool i had my discman hooked up to my tape player in my car instead of springing for a in dash cd player. looking back, it was kinda tacky. Now its 2009, not 1999. SAME THING. same. Its the same. only now you arent driving a honda civic or a camaro, you are driving a bmw

I'm trying to figure the same thing out. I think I am going to get the AUX adapter so I can listen to more then just my IPOD. For example I get Internet Radio through my 3G, this wouldn't work with the IPOD hookup but will with aux. I still think it is stupid expensive for the programming, feel like I'm being fleeced!

Shop around, diff dealers charge diff rates:

Some will fleece you, some are actually ethical. Give your business to the ethical ones and maybe the rest will get the message.

No need to pay for programming.. As long as you have Nav and a CD changer, just go in and tell them that your in-dash CD player doesn't play MP3 CDs. There's an SIB about it, they'll upgrade Progman for free. Then you go to the parts counter, get your iPod interface for $299 - 10% for being a good bmwcca.org member (you are, aren't you?), and you go home and spend 15 minutes installing it.

Viola. Done. iPod able to be controllerd via iDrive.

I have the aux input in my car and have been using it since I bought the car (about 3 weeks now), and it is tacky. Cables running here, there, and everywhere. My buddy's CTS is so much cleaner, what with just being able to use the nav touch-screen to control the iPod. No cables hanging about.

I have an appointment for the programming next Monday. That afternoon, I'll probably pick up the iPod adapter and install it. Depends if they have one in stock.

That's fine, get the software upgrade, but without a CD changer, you can't use the iPod adapter.

I think there was something about Nav in all this too, which is why I mentioned it, but I'm not sure. Search on here, there's a million threads that cover all this.
