Default Intriguing / pain in the arse problem with dash!!

I have recently purchased my 2007 520d m sport.,the car is in lovely condition, owned by a banker who only put 45k miles on it and the interior is spotless. The metal panel (stainless steel??) that covers the vents in the dash has had a 'no smoking' sticker on it at some point. The sticker has now been removed but the logo is somehow stained into the metal and I just can't get it off. Does anyone have any ideas because it is really doing my head in!!

Help graciously received!

Cheers
Mark

Actually what has happened is the sticker has protected the metal and the area around it has oxidized. This became a problem when the US started requiring the car to have a visible airbag warning sticker. Later they developed a hanging tag that you can remove and if left in place won't change the color of the metal trim, just look s silly. You might try some 3m polishing compound and a rag. Just apply a little to the rag and rub it back and forth with the grain. My guess is that it will be very difficult to remove or rather bring the remaining metal up to the color of the sticker'ed area.

Thanks for the response; yeah I think it's looking like it is permanent :/

Have to either find another sticker to cover it (pretty rubbish) or get a new panel. Grrrrr
