A month ago I noticed a sudden drop in my fuel consumption and I now feel it is consistent.
I keep a very close watch on my statistics and driving conditions and had a consistent avg consumption of 6,9 litres / 100 km from about 20.000 km to 50.000 km then the consumption rather suddenly dropped to 6,2 litres / 100 km.
This is about 50% highway, 30% city and 20% country roads.
I generally stick to speed limits and use CC on 6th gear (manual).
Note that this is a almost fully equipped touring with ACC always on (avg outside temp 10-25 deg C) always headlights on and other electricity also used to max. The wheels are dunlop runflats on 18" 124 style rims.
Not heavy loaded with luggage etc. but about half the time driven with 3 passengers (the rest with one).
As I have mentioned before I had an 320D E46 earlier that in the end (250.000 km) consumed 4,9 litres/100 km under the same circumstances and that also dropped during ownership but not that sudden (and a bit earlier as I remember).
Maybe this is normal for diesel engines or perhaps a sudden improvement of the fuel (I always use the same brand). Perhaps it?s a fluke but it doesn?t seem like it.

I have not noticed that, but after 10.000 km my engine started to comsume less diesel...

Diesel engines need some kilometers to break-in, but why you have such a fall in consumption I can't say

btw - you drive alot!

I used to have 11 on 100 when new, dropping from 10 to 8,9 constantly after some 20000 km's
But your 6,2 sounds bloody low if you ask me.
I wish I could do that. And i'm not that fast a driver! I do 200km's a day mostly highway and with maximum speeds of 140 untill I cross the border to Germany. And then going 180-200 does not affect consumption that much.
So, is the 530 sooo much more efficient compared to the 535???

Well I use the cruise control and it?s almost always set to 120-110-90-70 and even sometimes 50 (in 6th gear that feels rather lame but it works although I then inevitably get cars close to my rear confused why a BMW would be driven that slow). When in Denmark I use 130 and in Germany 150-160 if available on the autobahn (the fastest yet is 205 km/h). I almost never brake (but I do light "service braking" now and then to hopefully avoid the savings in fuel being eaten by cost of replacing rusted brakes).
My winter tyres (non studded) actually brings down fuel consumption further (they are not runflats and 17" instead of summers 18").
Biggest impact on fuel consumption with my driving style actually is rain and strong wind direction.
The consumption average started out around 7,9 litres/100 km when car was new but have slowly declined to 7,4-7,2-6,9 and now then rather distinctively fallen to 6,2 at close to 60000 km (in approx one year)

I noticed also an improvement from 8 l/100 km to 7,5 l after 15000 km.

But I am not ablble to say if it is not caused by the warmer temperature in spring and summer.

I also saw a drop from more than 8l/100km to 7,5l/100km after 10.000km without changin my driving habits. For me, it seems that the drop occured after a trip to Italy for holidays : 2 times 1500 km of highways.
