If the icon you saw was yellow, I wouldn't worry.

if it was red, I would go to the dealers.

It's DEFINITELY the snowflake.
The icon you see in the manual is not the icon on the display (it's not meant as that, look in other places in the manual, the same icon is used to show important information).

If it was a gear icon, it would be red and stay on even if the error went away.
It would also show up in the iDrive logs.

I put in a new battery today. That should calm the warning and message beast.

It can honestly be anything. The Mechatronic sleeve is very common to leak on those tranny's. It is where the wire harness goes through the transmission to connect the tranny control module to the engine control module. It could of also been low battery voltage. If you installed a new battery(i recomend Factory BMW) you need to have that registered in the vehicle through the dealer other wise you can have an overcharge condition because the car does recignize it as a new battery and charges at the rate of an aged worn battery.

It's a Duralast Gold 95R and is a ringer for the OEM. The BMW dealer is going to register it next week.
