Now, I did find out out that the kombi and LMA both were apparently running with another (older) S/W version then they should as the whole car was up to date S/W wise.

Prior to that also replaced the alternator, just in case as I still was not happy about the voltage spikes it created (range of 12.7-15-4 volts during charging ), now it is more contained where the range should be I think. The cluster just got progressively worse as time passed where it was no to the point of constantly re-booting while driving.
Hi cmyachtie . I have the same problem with the cluster and voltage as yours. Fist a had a dead battery and voltage issue. At the near car service couldnt find any problem. After replacing it i was thinking the problem is gone, but the ploblem with the cluster appear. I am thinking that its connected with the outside temperature as well. If its below 0 degree the cluster is freeking out as yours. If its above zero its only restarting when i am driving. When the car gets warmer the problem seem to fade away. What happend with yours. Did you find the solution. Please advise. Regards

Yes, my solution was to pay the dealer for reprogramming whole car with updated software all has been good with cluster for over a year now. They charged me $250 IIRC, so was better than I expected.

Good luck,

Default cluster issue

I got the the root cause of the cluster issue. it iwas the 3V3 regulator section acting up. The output polymer capacitor might had dried already causing high ripple on the 3.3V output, it will eventually affect the microprocessor supplying it and affects all the signals to reset the cluster. what I did was I piggy back a 820uF electrolytic capacitor on top of the small polymer capacitor and now it's working fine. I hope this help.

UPDATE....
looks like I have not provided any updates since 2015 on this issue and her is goes....
Around 2018 when things got colder again in the fall got same symptoms again and made another trip,to dealer to be get same process done again and all was good again till last fall and this time I decided that i wasn’t gonna keep giving dealer my $$$ and got myself some knowledge of WINKFP and flashed the cluster myself, took about half an hour IIRC, which fixed my problem again.
I have no idea whether or not my cause is related to the latest post above but either way 5his is my fix if it reoccurs.
Hope this helps someone......

What event is occurring inside your car that you would have to re-flash the cluster?

How would the lines of code in the ECU get corrupted that would require you to re-flash?

Good question, however I don’t have a good answer for it other than I speculate that it has to do with failing communication due to the fault codes:
A557 Debuginfo Kombi and 27EE, Which is a CAN bus communications failure, it worked three times for me so far in the 8 years I have driven this car.

Here's a wide ass guess on why this is happening.

Electrical spikes, drops, wave form variations are sending the modules into a tail spin.
