You are right, I looked at both poplars live today. The dark is on every 5 series but I found a couple of E90 convertibles one with light and one with dark poplar. I have changed my order but honestly, I think either with look fine. Lighter wood shows more grain and therefore looks richer. When you look at old Jags and RRs from the 60's you only see walnut which is a lighter wood.
Exactly my point, the depth of the wood grain used is integral to the overall effect and degree of light/darkness. The one you saw sounds as if it had a good degree of grain and so looked rich. If I remember, the one I saw did not have much graining and so looked too light and washed out.
