Did the research first, but did not see this exact discussion. I picked up an '04 525i still under CPO(about 6 months left) about 2 weeks ago. Today I got a CEL/SES light with increased emissions fault. Scanned w/my scanner and got two codes. P0174 and P0171. Seems it's running lean, any thoughts on common areas to check(besides gas cap)?. Any advice would be appreciated

I would pay for a software upgrade, regardless. There were way too many weird faults coming on during the first few months with my '06, 525xi. I have not had a single iDrive fault since the upgrade.

If the fault is tied to software, any idea if it would be covered under CPO warranty? What do they usually charge for software upgrade? I hope it's O2 sensor, mileage is aprrox. 61k. Went through a huge pain with Mercedes due to some emission type issues on a C230k, replaced boat boat load of parts for similar codes. They had a crappy cam sensor design, when the o-ring inside broke down, it resulted in oil following the harness to both 02 sensors and the computer, all of this after warranty went out and MB assuming no liability. So I hope this is not going to be one of those issues and hopefully covered under CPO. Thanks for any input

Took the car in to BMW dealer where I purchased it for the faults/codes. Also had them look at two other items, one is a popping in steering during full turns at a slow paring lot speed, and AC does not cool off very quick without turning it off and putting it on auto. They are supposed to be diagnosing it now, and I'm gonna be highly pissed if they expect me to go deep into my pocket since I just bought it two weeks ago, so I guess this will be a test for CPO usefulness. More later

For those interested the dealer diagnosis was bad fan for AC and recharge, so the $50 deductible applies and they will cover with CPO. On the other hand, they are saying after troubleshoot and smoke test codes are result of one bad valve. I had noticed and increase in noise under covers(tapping) but was not sure. I still think it's wrong. Anyhow, they say the the hardware is covered by CPO but associated items, hoses....etc for job and labor associated with them is not covered. Bottom line is $461 for the job, and SA says I'm getting a great deal, like they are doing me a favor. Great deal for a car I had 13 days when light showed and called dealer, and 15 when brought to shop. I say BS and called BMWNA to say BS. They are supposed to be getting back with me after speaking with case manager. At first they of course quoted me about CPO, hoses, fluids, blah blah. Then sorta had the attitude that...well it's a used car. True, but it's still their product, and their dealer is not standing behind it 13 days after purchased CPO from BMW dealer. They started to warm up and said I could go ahead and authorize work and they would work to see what they could do to include possible refund. So, not sure how it will pan out. I do know that if it's got a bad valve already, this is probably not going to be the last visit or issue with this dealer. May have to look into the AZ lemon law.

Ok, so SA has no real mechanical knowledge, when he tells me valve, I find out after getting work order that it's more accurately the oil seperator valve. Seems when they did the smoke test, there was a cracked hose, so they replaced all the rubber. And the AC just got a recharge under the CPO maint. contract left on car. So in all, still had to fork over $480 to get it back. For those codes, oil sep. valve sounds more reasonable. However I still am not conviced on AC, as it is still blowing warm upon pickup, but I let them know again about my disgust and they assured me they will fix it for free if the recharge does not improve. They still not believe they should foot the bill on this, so I will give BMWNA time to try and work it out. Thanks for all the input given, I will get this updated after I talk to BMW.
