So I was driving on the highway yesterday, cruising at 70mph for about 1 hour and I got a very brief error message on the iDrive screen : "Increased Emissions!" that only lasted for a few seconds and then disappeared. Now the "Service engine soon" light is on in the main instrument panel. I have not noticed anything else unusual in performance, sounds, etc.

Any ideas?

You're going to need to get the code read.
Could be a random cyclinder misfiring or a bad O2 sensor but its really hard to guess what it is if it's driving normally.

My Ride: 2004 BMW E60 530i, upgrades: Magnaflow exhaust, Mtec angel eyes and low beam head lights, Just purchased 172 style wheels, looking around for the best tires on Tire Rack now. R1 concepts rotors drilled/slotted. Saving for the M-style kit from Trinity Auto.

Maybe the catalytic converter? Does your car rattle when you excelorate?

After I changed the oil and added just a tad too much, the Increased Emissions warning came on. I drained a little oil to bring it back into the "normal" zone and after a hundred miles or so, the warning went away and hasn't been back. The dealer said that too much oil could bring up such a warning.
When I say I added a "tad too much" oil, it was only to the top of the highest teardrop on the dipstick.
So yes, check the codes, but check your oil level first.

You'll need a diagnostic tool like the Bavarian Technic ODB2 cable and a laptop to read the fault codes or you can make your own tool. INPA software + EBay ODB2 cable + laptop. There's a learning curve and more reading to do if you make your own but it costs alot less.
