I had this error message some time ago (probably 6 months or so) and they had to replace an oxygen sensor in the exhaust system. The error message has come on again this week end, so I will see what it is this time ...

Was the error still there when you took it into the dealer? or was it gone? I mean if its not there I'm not sure how much they can do...

A few weeks ago I had the increased emmissions warning as well as a transmission fault warning. It turned out to be the crank shaft sensor which was a simple repair. No problems since.

Was the error there when you took it into the dealer? Cuz Mine is gone now so I'm holding it off till it comes back. Or should I just take it in?
I hate intermittant problems...

Long story... but it was intermittant. When I took it to the dealer, the problem had come and gone twice-- it was fine when I brough it in for service. They found an error code in the computer that didn't give them much information to go on, so they checked several systems to narrow down the problem. They also found a service bulletin that said to upgrade to CIP version 18.0 or higher, so they did that as well. These software upgrades are amazing-- they said it takes three hours to remove and re-load the software... slow I/O or huge files I guess. In my case, the transmission was definately slipping when the problem arose. If you have only had the emissions light come on and go away without any other symptoms, you might want to hold off. But if you've had problems that affected the performance of the car you souldn't wait -- just take it in.

Do you happen to have that bulletin number? or have a way to obtain that... Maybe your invoice might ahve the bulletin number?

I'm curious to see what it says...

Anyone have a copy of it?

I don't have a copy, here is what the service report said:

"...pulled up service measure report with SSS and found that EGS module needs to be updated. Need to program module and recheck. Programmed and encoded entire vehicle using CIP 18.1.... Vehicle operates as normal at this time..."

"...with Gt-1 found fault # 2B5C in DME. Fault indicates defective crankshaft sensor. Checked wire...wires checked OK ... removed and replaced sensor. Cleared fault memory and adaptation values....vehicle operates as normal at this time. "

I have a 2004 545i. I also had the increased emisions warning and the service engine soon light go two times already. First time i took the car to the dealer they said that i had a misfire on cylinder # 1. Then they swiched the coils around so they can see if the fault is on the coil itself or there is a more serious mechanical problem. They reset the computer and gave me the car back. A week later I had the same problem. Took the car back and after a week they told me that they couldn't find anything wrong with the car so they got BMW NA involved. Bmw NA said there is a buletin about this issue. Yesterday I received a call from my dealer saying that Bmw NA wants to replace all the upper parts of my engine including the valvetronic system which they suspect is the cause of the problem. It sound to me like an upper engine rebuilt. It is a shame since my car has only 18.000 miles. I was promised to get the car back on Tuesday. I will let you know how everything went. Wish me luck. I think I need it.
