After one year of trouble free ownership, now I am being plagued with an increased battery discharge everytime I leave the car overnight. I have to reset the date and time and wait for AS to initialize I have a service appointment this morning.

I know it can be a number things not allowing the car to sleep. But, has anyone experienced this issue and what was the root cause.

I am just curious to see what it could be before I bring my car in. Any input would be appreciated.

I had this warning on my vehicle before. In my case, the car was going into sleep mode properly. Ultimately, it turned out to be caused by battery getting old and car not being driven frequently. After replacing the battery and using BMW charger, I haven't seen this warning since.

Considering your car is only a year old, my guess is that the battery is good. Of course, this is under the assumption that you drive enough to keep the battery charged. Is your car not going into sleep mode after 20-30 minutes?

Very helpful posts. I'm having the very same issue, and need to schedule service to have it checked out.

Be sure to unplug everything from the power sockets. Unfortunately devices plug in, though off, can cause the car to stay awake, at least according to 2 SA's I've delt with regarding power issues. And FYI - I was denied battery replacement warranty coverage because the car reported that an extra module was plugged in and kept it from sleeping - my GPS plugged into the ash tray socket.

Occassionally I have a phone charger plugged into my ash try socket and it stops( light goes out )charging when the car goes to sleep , it's alway off in the mornings , thats why those portable "plug in" car battery chargers won't work in these cars................

Did the SAs explain just how something that is plugged into an outlet while that outlet is not receiving power can cause your car to fail to go into sleep mode? My Escort is always plugged into the ashtray outlet and the phone charger cord is never unplugged from the rear outlet and my M61 appears to sleep soundly- sometimes for two or three weeks at a time- with no apparent problems. I did, however, experience a failed battery at !6K (a bad cell -not uncommon w/some recent BMW batteries according to the SA) and it was replaced under warranty.

Chargers can still draw power, even though the host device (phone, GPS, etc) may be off. Though you turn the ignition off and 12v current is disconnected, closed loops exists within the transformers and circuits of the chargers. Apparently, this is detected by the damn car (why? God only knows...) and can lead to premature battery issues. Not sure if that's BS - this is the first car I've owned that needs things to be in place before it can 'sleep'.

Do you recommend that I purchase a trickle charger? BMW branded model or other?
