My Ride: '05 545i - scheduled for ED pickup in Munich on 7/22!
I've been reading about how popular diesels have become in Europe. In the US, there are no diesels except for trucks so I have no idea what its like to drive one. I am very intrigued by the high torque figures on current diesels and even claims that a 535d is faster around Nurburgring that a 545i.
Can you tell me what its like to drive a modern diesel engine? What does the engine sound like? Does all the power and torque come low in the rpm range? Is there no need to rev the engine high? Does it feel like an American V8?

So the new generation common-rail diesel is awesome kicks ass as you prefer
The torque is enourmous e.g. in 3L 530d standard is 500Nm, the hp 218, top speed 245-250km/h.
Then I have always hated diesel they were like tractors of my grandpa loud not evironment friendly, when idling the engine was terrible.
Old Germany and east europe you had all those oldies Merc etc.
NOW there is no noise at all.
Here is my story when I took on a test drive my baby (comes 08.2005) so I turned on the ignition and hardly noticed the engine, no sound at all.
Then I went on the highway-used an auto, steptronic car- and then I pushed down the gas pedal suddenly all the way down..... RESPECT CANNOT FIND WORDS...
even with stock exhaust it had a deep tone nice almost "race" sound, then when the shifter moved into upper gear again no sound noise just the radio, I switched off, then just the wind. But really, my friend has a Lexus 430-almost the same in the bimmer.
Ok then auto mode looked at the consumption between 50-in city auto- 160-170km/h on highway-it was hardly 10L. That time the oil-here diesel- was much cheaper... but whatever it will cost I do not care. If my baby eats and I don't its ok with me

The new common-rail engined diesel cars, BMW first place have particulate filter, that does not allow the exhaust etc. to let more CO in the air as set by strict European regulations, BNW is EU 4. Since 1st MAy 2005 the cars in the biggest EU contries and cities will be only allowed if they have a part. filter and meet EU 4.

[/quote]The 535d has 2 turbos so that you get about 80% of max torque from 1,500rpm and then the max torque figure much further up the rev range meaning massive acceleration right up to 5,000rpm - Just a wonderful experience
The 530d has a single turbo with massive amounts of pull but doesn't rev as high as the 535d. The 525 is the same but with slightly less power than the 530d.
In short you don't need to rev them hard to get exciting performance.
At very low revs you can hear a small clatter of diesel sound but after 1,500rpm they sound smooth with a nice growl. Not like a petrol v8 or straight 6 but still very refined.

If you just want to get a sampling of how far they have come, you could check out a couple that are available in the US. You may have to go to a nearby state that does not follow the CARB rules, because they are not available in those states, which I think New York is one of them.
Current ones are the Mercedes E320 CDI, and the VW Taureg. I would imagine that the E320 might give you an indication of what we could expect from a BMW diesel, but would submit to our Euro counterparts to have a comparison of the differences. I know it is a MB, but would give you a good idea.

If you just want to get a sampling of how far they have come, you could check out a couple that are available in the US. You may have to go to a nearby state that does not follow the CARB rules, because they are not available in those states, which I think New York is one of them.
Current ones are the Mercedes E320 CDI, and the VW Taureg. I would imagine that the E320 might give you an indication of what we could expect from a BMW diesel, but would submit to our Euro counterparts to have a comparison of the differences. I know it is a MB, but would give you a good idea.

) They sell a lot in the UK though!
