PDC is nice. I had it on my '01 E39 but it was limited to one front speaker and one rear speaker as a warning.
With the E60, all four speakers are used independently to audibly indicate what quadrant the obstacle is in. Add to that the visual display on the iDrive screen and all I can say is that it's greatly improved and kind of spoils you. Since I had it on my old car, I wanted it on this one too.
I wouldn't say it's a must have option -- there are plenty of others that I consider "must have" first -- so I wouldn't second guess your decision to not get it.

Sometimes its quick, sometimes its slow. I had to reboot recently - and just switching off and removing the key didn't work :
I was driving to London and I spotted a problem on my route (M4 closed), so I diverted around Swindon.....Nav didn't like this, went beserk, telling me to take a U turn, then locked up, then all buttons failled to work, then the stereo came on at full volume - pulled over into some services, switched off the car.....stereo went off. Was walking into the services to get coffee - about 30 meters from the car I heard a stereo so loud it must have been making the vehicles occupants ears bleed - then I realised it was my car - stereo had switched itself back on. The only wway I could shut it up was to pull the fuse and replace it......then it was fine. Anyone experiance similar?
It was fuse 15 in the glove box by the way.
I share the frustrations about the PDC when driving out of the garage - My car is equipped with "blues and twos" as I respond from home for my job in one of the emergency services, and you just can't wait the 30 secs it takes to get the screen going - I just cringe when I go past the garage door posts and hope!!!!
Hey - on that note - I wonder how many other E60s have (legal) blues and twos - I have a mag-mount light at the moment with a built in siren, but am looking at a solution where the lights are mounted behind the kidney grill - I just don't want to disrupt the dash with extra switches - Dr Diesel - are you on a green light? If so, how do you mount it?
