If everything is working properly, according to the technical documentation, I think the screen should look "normal" in temperatures from about -30 degrees Celsius on up. If the screen looks dim in cold weather, as I mentioned before, it's possible that the heating function is not working properly...
Mine does the same thing, very dull for 1-2minutes in cold weather, then goes normal. Plenty of poeople on here experience the same so it must be normal. My car is 2008.

2008 328I Convertible, Sapphire black on beige interior. Premium package, NAV, iPod adapter.
Retired: 2002 325I, Titanium silver on black leather. Premium package. Absolutely stock and proud of it.
I haven't noticed it on my 2006 E60.

Same thing happens here, but I noticed my screen flickers subtly, I was wondering if this was a sign of bad things to come. I'm in NC and the temps have been on the mild side.

There is an ambient light sensor that controls the relative brightness of the display. Once in a while, depending on conditions, the screen will go from dim to bright repeatedly. I've seen it happen when it's dark outside and I'm driving down a road with many streetlamps illuminating the roadway. As each street light hits the ambient light sensor, the screen will brighten for a second and then go back to dim. Depending on how fast you're travelling down the road, this constant bright/dim/bright/dim might be described as flickering...
