They updated my software for free last year and never mentioned any module risk. My car was under warranty though. Everything worked fine and the new graphics and automatic by pass of that annoying "lawyer" screen are great improvements.

My Ride: 2006 525XI, Jet black on Dakota beige. Premium and winter packages. I consider myself a purist and intend to keep my car absolutely stock and shiny.
2008 328I Convertible, Sapphire black on beige interior. Premium package, NAV, iPod adapter.
Retired: 2002 325I, Titanium silver on black leather. Premium package. Absolutely stock and proud of it.

Mine has been updated twice, under warranty, and never had a problem. Your mileage may vary, though.

Mines getting updated under warranty on the 26th. Hopefully I can get them to enable mp3 on my cd player this time. I even gave my SA the instructions.

So if i go to bmw i can get the idrive update for free if im under warranty?
There has to be a reason for the update, you simply can't ask for it. If there is no problem/issue requiring the update, the dealer will make you pay for it...
