:'( was driving half way when the iDrive display blanked out totally. the stereo died as well & PDC doesn;t sound or display the visual monitor.
unable to bring it up even by pressing the idrive controller
the rest of the car is fine & pressing CHECK reveals no faults.
anyone knows what's wrong?
heard from my dealer that it's happened on 7-er

Yep.
Once Idrive freezes you have two options:
1) park car for at least five minutes,
2) press "mute" (volume knob), "CD eject" and "DVD eject" all together and the system reboots in about twenty seconds. You can even do that while driving.

it just got worse!!even when the iDrive doesn't freeze up, when playing from my CD player - the audio sound broken. the cd player seems to be reading the CD correctly - because the time display doesn't halt or skip when the music sounds broken.
Here is the reboot procedure without Nav.
Turn on key
at the same time push in the radio volume and CD eject buttons
hold them in until the LCD turns off,
wait until LCD is back to the "accept screen"
