Regardless of whether or not you really "need" to follow the break-in procedures (clearly, you don't "need" to do anything), I choose to follow the owner's manual for my vehicle:

Seems pretty clear to me.

Well assuming one wants to live, then he/she needs to breathe, for example. ~0{;^) Too picky I know. I deserve a demerit.

I can only tell you that on my test drives, I was unaware of the break-in procedures. We pushed the car (at the SA's prompting) and clearly got it over 4500rpm several times. I would guess that was standard procedure at this dealership.

Yup, me too. The sales guy promotes running the cars hard even in test drives. That being said, I would still follow break in directions per BMW if it were my car, or my lease car.

dumb q did you test new cars, here we have not 0000kms but over the brake-in that's maybe as many have already driven, I tested the highs and hard braking on the test drive not ours when we got it finally.

Sales guys want to sell new cars. The more often they do it, the more money they make. They are counter motivated and I would never trust information they provide that might affect their income. The sooner a car is trashed the sooner they get to sell a new one. The duration of the break-in period is relatively short and to me it's not worth risking future problems.

If you are leasing and blow off the break-in advice, what will you do if your situation changes and it becomes advantageous to purchase the car at the end of the lease?

You must be a great driver. I park really slowly/carefully to avoid ding-dangs and curb-bangs. ~0{;^)
