I'm 100 miles in, and definitely following the break-in procedures. I want the car to perform well for me, and for anyone else who may have it in the future.

Frankly I think that attitude is piss poor. I don't lease cars, but if I did I would respect the car for what it is and treat it well. Not to mention it's the right thing to do for the next owner.

Please tell me your joking...

Ok, question... I lease, and am follwing break-in according to the owners manual. But, my dealer specifically said, "there is no break-in period with these cars. Drive it as hard as you want." I have read similiar things about the new engines not needing the traditional break-in period. Any thoughts? I know the obvious answer to this is going to be "why would you listen to the dealer when the manual is specific on this", but my question is why would the dealer volunteer this information, especially if it is wrong?

I treat lease cars no differently to how I treat the cars I own. I want it to stay in good shape for me, and anyone else how may own it in future. That said, I'm not at all convinced that 1200 miles break in - totally as per the the recommendations in the manual - is necessary.

I am also leasing and I did follow the break-in procedure, but let me just say this -

When I picked up my car in Munich at the ED Center, they said to me in a heavy German accent:
"Of course you know about the break-in procedure. Stay under 4k rpm and 100 mph. After that, vary your rpms as your speed comes down."

I asked, "Hypothetically, what would happen if I go over 100mph and 4k rpm?"

They replied, "THAT'S WHAT I JUST SAID! VARY YOUR RPMS AS YOU SLOW DOWN AFTER GOING OVER 100MPH!"

Yeah, but you also don't want to keep paying for the car that's going to be in the shop all the time and you going be driving loaner car like Ford Focus, and keep making payment for BMW. I think you should respect the car even if it's yours or not.

Also when I told this story to my salesperson back in the US when I was taking redelivery, he said:
"Yeah if I were you I would've taken the car up to top speed on the Autobahn. These modern engines are so advanced, its not like they're gonna blow up because you didn't follow the break-in procedures."

I would listen to BMW. Your answer is dealer ignorance. Although, not following the break-in procedure is much less likely to have a bad outcome today than in the "old days."

I don't think you are wrong. I don't do right and wrong. But, I prefer that you follow the break-in procedure for the benefit of other potential owners.
