sorry noob question ...so i've had this car for couple of months now but never really gunned it to redline but last night i pressed on it to redline but it didnt upshift. it was on DS mode it cut off and lost power....... i know it cuts off to prevent engine damage but i was expecting it to upshift. i have a 08 535i. should i be concern ? thanks in advance for the help

i floor my car all the time, and it always upshifts.

when you were in DS mode, did you by chance tap the shifter again and go into manual mode...M1,M2, etc?

no it was on DS mode .. my car drives fine .. do you press it all the way down from a stop ? am i suppose to gradually press it all the way down or ease off a bit when nearing redline .. also even if it was on M1 it should still upshift right?

 

if you let off the gas when the trans is about to shift, the trans wont upshift....in sport mode. if you want the trans to upshift, keep holding the gas. lifting your foot off the gas is like telling your car that you want to slow down, so the car stays in the same gear and the engine is used to help slow you down. if you are in regular drive mode, then the shifting pattern is different and more normal.

 

but i didnt let go of the gas... it just lost power when i was redline thats when i released the gas then the car went back to normal... how do u do it

 

when you put the car in DS, it said DS on the dash too, right? not M1 or similar?
if you were in DS mode and floored it and didnt let up, the trans should have upshifted. otherwise it sounds like your car have an issue.

 

yes it was on DS mode for sure.... i use manual auto sometimes ... the car drives fine though but it feels kinda jerky when the gear shifts not alot though .. this is my first bmw is that normal?

 

Did you press the accelerator hard enough to feel the kick-down switch? Maybe you were already in a lower gear and going too fast for a downshift?
