I also have no clue but just like doing it for no apparent reason. It impresses the other occupants of the car at the time though.
Other than that, I never use it. Just a lot of useless mumbo-jumbo in my view. FrankyBMW ought to have one more screen display which would be part of an extended OBC for items like, battery volts, Engine temp (water), oil temp, gearbox oil temp (if there is a sensor already), A/F ratio and BOOST. yummy.
Alpina used to have a similar thing years ago on their E36 car if memory serves me right. It used to display 4 items and it was an add-on that was on the lower part of the instrument cluster (outside). If anyone had the knowhow and came up with something similar which gets the data from the car ECU, I would pay good money for it.
