i drive says imperial gallons but hidden menu says US gallons

The i drive is set to show fuel consumption in UK gallons, but when I enter the hidden system menu by holding down the trip button on the odometer and entering chassis code, the hidden menu tells me that it is reading US gallons. If I then change the readout to litres in the i-drive, the hidden menu displays litres, but f I change the i-drive to US gallons, the hidden menu shows UK gallons!! Very weird. E61 525d 2005.
