Got my first BMW, a 530 CPO, 3 months ago. Love the vehicle, but started having a "minor" problem with my i-drive... it sometimes boots to the accept screen and won't respond to any commands. The date and time fields are filled with dashes, and the radio is muted. This has progressively gotten worse, so I finally made an appointment with service.

They had my car all day, and could not find any problems.

I must say, my first impressions with the local BMW service were not the greatest.

From the moment I walked in, these guys acted like their s**t didn't stink. When the service advisor found out it was in an i-drive issue, he said i should not have been given a Saturday appointment. He said that these types of issues require heavy remote diagnostics with BMW and they are closed on Saturday.
Told me not to wait because this could potentially take all day. OK, not a big deal. When I picked the car up this evening at 4:00 (i dropped off at 10:00) was told the vehicle was road tested and did not have any issues.

Sucks not having your car all day and not accomplishing anything. I can't imagine they spent more than 30 minutes with my car.

If it was not for this forum, I would not have known how to re-boot the i-drive (my service guy never suggested it).

I will wait until it locks up again and bring it back.

Ya sadly because its an intermittent problem they will turn it on and look and go "Cannot duplicate problem" and move on. I dont think they get paid for diagnosing problem... so they will not spend the time. if the problem persists look for cobradav's post on exiting problems that can be fixed via software upgrade and go on and complain about one of those specific problem and they will hopefully upgrade your software and hopefully fix the iDrive locking up issue.

BUT if you car has no problem I would suggest not to upgrade just for the sake of upgrading... S/W upgrades dont always turn out to be better.

Keep in mind that replacing the CCC is - as a recent post here noted - not covered by the CPO warranty. The cost is $1900.

Updating the software may also not be covered - although since the software covers myriad purposes I am not sure whether this ultimately would be true.

Take a photo of the problem next time the problem presents abd then present to SA It helps SA know that you are not a knucklehead but have a genuine problem.
