I have a December 2004 530D, only had it a few months. About 4 times in the past few weeks, when starting from cold in the morning the i drive has come up with - drive control system error, and the ABS and puncture warning failure messages. Later in the day it starts and the errors have gone.
Once it also said to check the battery connections, they were fine. This morning it did the same, but when restarting later the yellow battery warning light came on. Then on a further restart the battery error message cleared.
Went into a local garage, they checked the battery, which they said had good voltage but the Bosch checking machine said it was only accepting a 60% charge.
With the engine running the voltage at the battery showed 14.75 volts so seems the alternator is working.
I have realised it is when the outside temperature is quite low that this error comes up.

Does a failing battery cause these errors to be displayed because of the demands when trying to start a cold engine?

Jim

As far as I know, cold weather decreases battery life/performance. It could be that your battery is nearing it's end and the cold weather is not helping.... I'd switch out the battery

Yes.

jimyboyle:
- If you want to clear all the errors, you have to go to a dealer or some independent garage to clear them. I'd prefer an independent as it should not be so expensive.
- If you want to get the battery "registered" for your car (if it's not done already), then the same as above.

Went to car to set the time and date, done it, and all the other settings seem to have returned to normal.

Good to hear.

Some errors may stay in memory but you don't have to worry about them. They will be cleared next time when you visit the dealer.
