I have owned the e60 530 since Thanksgiving 03. Have approx 10K miles on it now. About 500 miles ago, the car started a loud humming w/in a few miles of my home. The noise changes in tones. It has come about maybe 4-5 times since then.
It's difficult to tell where the noise is coming from. At first I thought it was right rear. Dealer thought fuel pump was only thing back there. Dealer checked out, couldn't find anything wrong w/ the pump, and as Murphy would have it, the noise wasn't there the day I got it into the dealer.
This has persisted and is quite annoying/embarrasing. I just returned from a weekend in Las Vegas from Los Angeles, it started humming again the minute I arrived & continued till home. This morning on the way to work it has stopped again. I had a car load of people and we decided it's source is more the middle right.
Anyone had this same problem? Hopefully it will restart on the way home and I can take it straight to the dealer.
Other problems have been cupholder - fixed, no big deal. I also have had the trunk open chime 3-4 times since purchase go off for no apparent reason.

These cars must be full of little motors that keep a watchful eye on things. Even when unlocked, it starts whirring and wheezing like R2D2. I think it's neat. But, one thing for sure, those little motors aren't charging the battery -- milliamps likely small, though.
On anothr subject, sorry to hear about your service delay. Why not call BMWNA?

I agree. The car makes some weird noises. Im humms and whirls all the time. When you open you door it makes a noise even if the car has been unlocked in your garage. I never understood that one.

The car finally made the noise again when I was near a dealer during regular shop hours. Turns out it was coming from the fuel pump, even though it was obviously functioning, as I didn't have any problems with the car running.
They swapped it out in two days & haven't had any problems since then. They also filled my tank with gas.
