It shows speed, Cruise Control speed set, optional active cruise control settings, Navigation (general direction arrow on unlogged roads, detailed views on logged roads with countdown meter and junction layout, roadname etc - same as arrow view on iDrive screen) and check control messages.
It does not show radio or pdc. HUD is the option I was most surprised about its usability - it IS great with nav.
I doubt that anybody would advise getting it without having nav though.
Even if it has been available on cars before (fx Cadillac) the BMW implementation is outstanding in quality and ergonomy - I?m truly glad I went for it as I thought it was only for the fun factor but now I would miss it much (and I can clearly see the safety implementations).

HUD is awesome with NAV. It is much easier read critical information when it is displayed at the bottom of the windshield. I took Euro Delievery with my 545. HUD worked well with NAV in confusing non-orthoginal, non-grid European cities and while driving at high speed on the Autobahn. It works well for drivng in Chicago. In general I like it a lot.

Objekt described it very precise allready.
I wanted to have it, but my wife just allowed me buying it, because it has a switch for turning it off. Guess what... She allways drives with it!
That shows that even ppl who where a little scared, that it might be a problem for them, use it and love it. Probably not all...
But this a great feature!

You cannot order HUD without Nav (at least in US) and probably everywhere. I love it. It's a blast and I usually look for it in other cars I drive like wife's car or rental cars, until I remember they don't have it.

I love HUD. I thought it would be gimmicky, but it?s just great. I never look at my dash gauges anymore. I really love it when I use the nav since I can leave the radio or phone on the main display and the map in the assistant window.
Speaking of nav, is there anyway to get a direction list in the assistant window?
