potentially if I want to sell down the line, is the used car market favorable for sellers...e.g. lots of buyers, high prices.

the 03 e500, depreciated nearly 50% in just four years..I don't want to make that mistake again so I am considering if BMWs have better resale/depreciation..

In the UK, after 3 years, E60 is worth about 50% of basic purchase price, extras add no value at all. I think that is why price guides are so optimistic, due to the way BMW price cars. Hardly anyone buys a BMW with no options, as the basic spec is.. basic. But the price guides give % of basic new price, options are not taken into account. Leather & automatic are essential, but think twice before ordering other high tech options, you will not see that money again!!.

If you update your location details under "My Controls", it will help the quality of responses, because different models / colours / etc have impact in different regions.

In Germany you can get magazines or specialist used car price guides with the information you are after. You can get these at any newsagendy / kiosk / supermarket.

My car is a leased company car, so unfortunately cannot give you any personal feedback on used values of E60s.

I know I'm "different" but I would disagree with the statement that Leather and Auto are essential options (in the UK). I would say that leather is a good option to have for the resale as the $tealers don't want to know anything with cloth. Automatic boxes are another thing. Having searched for the last few months for a decent manual car, (both for sale privately and at dealerships) I have found that you have to be very quick to get one - they sell nicely. E61 manuals are as rare as rocking horse bob - I've only heard of one during my searches, and that was in the $tealers when I went to pick up my car! It is a good job really, because I would have preferred a Touring and this one cost ?6k more than my saloon (it was a newer car though). The salesman has since said that the Touring was in for less than a week, as was mine. He was under the impression that no-one wants a manual, but with hindsight he realises its because his company doesn't buy them!! If it was up to him, he would have more in because they are easy to sell!!

I have to say that I am not prejudiced against Auto's - I have had both, its just that I prefer manuals. I tow a caravan too - I said I was "different" didn't I??

my ?27k new 520d is valued by the dealer in 4 years time with 120k on the clock as worth 7k.

I put hardly any extras on it. In comparison to the 3 series i considered, the e60 has a lot more as standard. I could easily have added another 5k to the price, AND bought it as a Msport (another 3,200) rather than SE. But, as its going to be driven to 120k miles, why bother throwing more money away.

However, just take a look on ebay, at the silly money any (last 10 years) bmw sells for with starship milage. You wont get those prices from a dealer. Strange, a to me most s/h sticker prices at dealers are way high. Most likely well 'optioned up'

my car - its got cloth seats. I didnt feel inspired to spend more on something thats on a pcp and i wont be keeping (with 120k on it!!!! ????) in 4 years.

as i do 100 miles a day, i didnt even contemplate an auto. Would add 20% to my fuel bills.

'worth only 50%' a previous poster said.... compared with most cars that fabulous!

the car I p/x was a 30 month old renault laguna. it was 17,800 pounds new, and with 62k miles on it, i got 4,500 for it at the beemer dealer. Now thats friggin depreciation!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The E-Class of that vintage has a good reputation of being a lemon. In many parts of the world the BMW 5 has a fairly good return for it's class.

I think resale value depends on different countries. By that I mean, for example, the 5 series here cost like 110,000 USD, and the market for BMW is mostly younger people, making resale value for BMW crap. I drove my car for about 4 months, 2000 km, and the resale value dropped about 20,000 USD. Mercedes on the other hand hardly lose any value, my brother's CLK got the same value after 3 months 3000 km. So its really hard to say, because it all depends on the market and the country's tax, etc.
