Seriously! I cant believe my luck with this car.....BMW ownership has not been smooth.

Just get the car back after having SF removed and new transmission sump plate (was leaking) so all in a cool £900. Parked on the drive, 10 mins later I go to the shops and the CD head unit is now making a horrible clicking noise and not recognising the CD. If I take the CD out it stops making this ticking noise after a few seconds. Was working fine before....ARRGGHHHH!!!

Does anyone know whats the matter with it? It sounds terminal!

Not quite sure. If you are mechanically inclined you may want to take it out and examine. If not you can blow compressed air into to see if it's dust that's stuck on a spinning part that is the issue.

I have heard there are gain adjustments but haven't looked at mine throughly to say yes/no.

Adjusment of the cd drive pick up. Im not sure what's it called but the thing which actually read the cd..

But things like that cd are sometimes gone when you just let it be. So dont hassle anything for week or so and
try play cd..

I wouldn't blow compressed air in there- the air is usually full of oil and water. You should get a can of cleaner that is specifically used for cleaning electronics.
