Yup. The auto setting for the fresh air vent is usually just right.
Keep in mind that heat is supposed to come from the floor vents, not the dash vents. I've always found that if I have heat coming out of the dash vents, it causes my eyes to dry out and it increases driver fatigue.
Even on the E39, I usually used the automatic (center) setting on the little wheel that controls the temperature of the center dash vents...

Do you mean "turn on the heater" as a extra heater, which warm up the engine and the inside of the car when the engine is off, and the car is parked ?
The option Aux Vent in the settings is for COLD air, and it's a nice feature during warm summer months.
As a extra equiptment you can orden the car with AUX HEATER, which consumes fuel, and heat the cabin and the coolant water in the car, so you skip cleaning your windows from ice in the mornings... A nice feature for us with some cold winters
