I use it when I need to add some fun to my day ... otherwise, for spirited driving DS has learned enough about my driving style to fire off shifts faster than I can.

Caution: Noob at the keyboard:

But the tranny doesn't take damage when you shift where it normally wouldn't shift? Let's say the car shifts at 4000rpm in D mode, if I shift approximately 700 rpm before or after that it won't damage the tranny right?

An auto tranny can be damaged in many ways, including in your post re. shifting to neutral. Hard driving (hard launches, consistently high revs, etc...) will also obviously wear on the transmission, and if you consider this as "damage", then so be it.

As for your question about shifting at 700rpm above the normal shift point...no, the transmission will not be damaged if you manually shift at 4700 vs. the normal 4000 shift point in auto. In fact, if you have the SAT, it will hold the revs and shift at higher points than standard.

I also manual shift, when driving in snow. There's better control that way.

Voted everyday and much of the day at that. Could it be that it will have caused me NOT to have new brake pads in all of my 100k miles (73k miles driven and CBS says 26K front and 36k rear before they are due for change)?

My car is in for surgery (not sure if major or minor electronics) and I am in a e90 335i with SAT. What a little monster and with the SAT it is just a blast to drive, much better than my '05 STEP. Now I do manual even more as it has the paddle shifters. This would be a great tranny on the ToD (road course like). What a torquey machine as well.

in manual mode your gearbox will not allow you to do anything that will wreck it.
it will not let you down shift if the revs are too high (try it) there is an auto protect module built in and as far as i know you cant over ride it.
the only damage that could occur is engine failure by holding the revs too high in a low gear (gear box would be fine, but engine could suffer)

True, and if you press and HOLD the downshift it will show the gear you want to go in but not do it until the EGS (tranny software) which gets input from ECU allows it and you hear that sweat rev match sound.
