My Ride: 2006 Titanium Silver 550i, with all the bells and whistles!!
Default

I'll admit to driving close to redline once in a while...

but I am surprised that I have had to add a litre 5000km after my last oil change? Is this normal?

(PS my average fule consumption is approximately 17mpg, to give a sense of how soft I drive )

I have never had to add oil between annual oil changes in my 550i.

I think if you drove it easy the entire year you would not have to add anything, but its those times that push it that do the trick. After the first Bear Mountain meet I had to add a quart of oil and after this last one my car was telling me it needed an oil change.

None on my '06 550i-- computer always read full. (I drive mostly highway, which is easy on the car.)

You are using the BWM performance oil, correct? Dealer maintained, right?

I average about 20 mpg.

+1 - I push it once in awhile -- but other than that, it seems to stay topped-off. Although, I do only average about 17 MPG...

1) On a new engine oil burning is usually caused by not breaking-in the engine properly (the piston rings do not form a proper seal)
2) On an old engine oil burning = engine wear (worn piston rings let oil through)

Driving style will not affect oil burning.

This is different from oil leakage due to failing gaskets etc. If you look around your engine and you see no oil leaks, then you are buring oil due to 1 or 2 above.

BTW, you should inspect your engine bay for oil leaks - it's a lot more likely that you have a seal that failed somewhere and you're leaking and not burning oil.
