It's the cold weather. Notice where the majority who don't use any oil live. Cold starts are the cause. My BMWs have always used oil. E46 ~ 7K mi/quart , E90 ~ 8K mi/quart, so far E60 ~ 6.2 K mi/ quart - changed at 7.5K . Usually after the first filter change the consumption drops about half. I change my oil ~ 7.5K mi so I add half a quart when the light goes on.

I would not worry about taking a BMW to redline at all because that is what these engines like is High RPM. My 545 burns zero oil but then again I get it changed every 7500. My 07 X5 4.8 burns 1 qt every 7-8k miles.

I'll admit to driving close to redline once in a while...
but I am surprised that I have had to add a litre 5000km after my last oil change? Is this normal?![Think](https://5series.net/forums/images/smilies/imported/think.gif)
(PS my average fule consumption is approximately 17mpg, to give a sense of how soft I drive

I had to add a quart at about 3,700 miles.
But this was after: (1) the Bear Mountain Meet; (2) trying out the Poconos meet route twice; and (3) going full tilt on the baddest, most dangerous long twisty road within 3 hours drive of New York -- Pennsylvania State Route 125. All were done with the pedal floored and the car in M2 or M3 with the DSC light going off like a Christmas tree. My run on Pennsyvania State Route 125 sent my oil level to the minimum allowable level, i.e., need 1 quart immediately.
Ah, the freedom of a leased car.
