I wonder if some of the people reporting high figures are including the sales tax you have to pay to get your initial tags?

Here in Missouri, I just spent $58.28 to renew for two years. I think it's $30 for one year. But, in the St. Louis area you have to get a $36 safety/emissions inspection every time (most other areas are exempt from the emissions test), so it's cheaper to get two years at a time. So, I guess my true total is $94.28 with the mandatory inspections.

Nope, that is on top of the sales tax. In Colorado, you pay property tax for the vehicle, 2.1% of the MSRP for the 1st year, 2% for the 2nd year, 1.5% for the 3rd year.

In NC, it's:
$28 renewal
+$30 emissions inspection
$58
It's a $250 fine if you're 90+ days late paying it!!

In NJ it was $72.
A bargain given our high property, sales and income taxes (all told I pay enough for some immigrant's salary
)
It's actually cheap considering many other states charge by value of the car and it can run into the hundreds of dollars
I better shut up before the state gets any ideas ![Fcuk](https://5series.net/forums/images/smilies/imported/fcuk.gif)
