Yeah.... in Washington, it used be an insane annual fee as the state had some sort of special book to base the value of the cars on that was not even close to blue-book. Well... that went on long enough and the people of the state revolted and ended up w/ tabs for $35 base, be it a Yugo or a Merc... they've slowly inched that up, but nothing like it used to be....

In Indiana, my '04 545 costs about $350 for tags. It sucks.

If they are going to charge different amounts of tax on different vehicles, then why don't they charge the taxes based on something that actually makes sense rather than just vehicle value? They could use vehicle weight, presence/absence of safety features, gas mileage, emissions controls, etc. I think some countries do this (they charge higher taxes on older cars to try to make people buy newer, safer and more enviromentally friendly cars). It doesn't make sense that I have to pay $350 while someone in a 78 Camaro w/no muffler or airbags can burn 8 mpg, pollute the environment, and pay only $25 in tax. It's just another American scam to redistribute wealth. Plain and simple.

And here for a 545i (245 kW/333 HP) you have to pay EUR 1000 every year only because you own the car .
2 years ago was 832, then the last damn government...

I would take the $387 anytime. In Colorado, I paid $1,200 for the 1st year on my 08 535xi. It's a total rip-off.

Here in Missouri, I just spent $58.28 to renew for two years. I think it's $30 for one year. But, in the St. Louis area you have to get a $36 safety/emissions inspection every time (most other areas are exempt from the emissions test), so it's cheaper to get two years at a time. So, I guess my true total is $94.28 with the mandatory inspections.

I wonder if some of the people reporting high figures are including the sales tax you have to pay to get your initial tags?

Mine is not. Indiana, Kentucky and many other states have personal property tax, similar to your residential property tax, that is collected each year at the time of vehicle registration. Same for personal boats, ATVs, cars, planes, etc. If you register it, you pay an annual tax based on the current value according to the state's value guide (which is always more than the blue book (which itself is inflated)). Anyway, like I said, the tax on my 4-yr old car this year was over $350. I can't imagine what it would have been when it was new.
