My 545i has five main spokes but they are doubled making 10. However, I have noticed that alloy wheels come in many numbers of spokes but the vast majority are either 5 or 7 spokes. Why an odd number? Is there some kind of rotational, vibrational, torsional standing-wave thingy at work here? Or is it just some kind of aesthetic input. Anyone made a study of this?

My 124s have 7 spokes per wheel X 4 wheels = 28.

2 + 8 = 10

10/4 wheels = 2.5 per wheel

2.5 spokes will not properly support a wheel under operational loads.

Therefore, they had to go with 7.

right, our 166's have about 20 per wheel , so 20x4=80. that should be enough for stability. lol

You can get wheels with 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 (see pic below).

You think how you want the wheel design to look, and you make sure the spokes are strong enough to do the job as well as something with more spokes.
