My non negotiable options are as follows in order of non negotiability:
1. STICK-main reason for getting a BMW 5 series AWD
2. Navi
3. Comfort seats
4. IPOD
Everything else just makes the car nicer.

P'haps if I wasn't blessed with 2 kids and a 3rd on the way I'd have a 335 drop-top. But I'm happiest that BMW offers an array of vehicles that suit many different needs, purposes, and wishes. Offering manual transmissions just increases that array. It's not about better or worse... it's about getting what fits you best. If BMW didn't offer a stick 5er wagon in the States I likely would have settled for a 3 year old E500 wagon for half the money. But BMW gave me a choice and I gave them my money.
I'm glad he likes what he has... DD's follow-up post reaffirms he made the best choice for him. I made the best choice for me, and you will likely always be able to buy a real automatic transmission for yourself. I think automatics are great... they're the only thing my mother can drive!

The only ones I might have been flexible on (because they're easy to change) would be #12 and #13. Everything else there was absolutely a requirement. I know myself and how if I'd waivered from the list and accepted the wrong colour or the wrong seats or something else, then I'd be unhappy with the car just a little bit. Instead I'm loving it, and how could I not, it's exactly what I was looking for. The bonus of also getting Sunroof, Dynamic Drive, Rain Sensor, folding/heated mirrors, Voice control, Run-Flats (summer AND winter sets), my favourite 'Type 123' 18"rims and my second favourite 'Type 138' rims for winter was the icing on the cake.

1995 E34 540i 6 speed black/truffle interior/alpinemp3/XMradio/M5 alloys (Many tears...sold to a fellow Boston bimmer enthusiast!)
I ordered my 6 speed E60 535i xdrive - it is now at the dealership and getting those RFTs removed and replaced with some real tires...
I'm replacing my 530xi 6 speed...
my dealership tells me that the 6 speeds are a rare breed in Boston...but I can't drive anything else -
