My Ride: 2004 545i - Bone stock... help!

My daughter is due this coming March 12th. I will be very sad indeed if her first car, 16 years from now, isn't a manual transmission. I know it's very unlikely that it will be, but even though I don't drive a stick (traffic in Dubai is just too horrid IMO), I really value the many years I've had with it, and the respect it teaches you for the car.
You're just more involved.
Hell, I've already got her practicing...

Perfect description.
I couldn't care less about 0-60 times. The fact is that I can still smoke most things you'll meet at a stoplight.
Actually, I really don't care about top end either.
It's all about the twisties and hitting the perfect double clutch or heel toe in a corner and enjoying every second of it.

I get the heel and toe, but why would you be double clutching with a transmission that's already fully synchronized?

Actually, for me, it's not a heel toe downshift, it's more like a "ball/edge" downshift. The pedals in the e60 are close enough together so that I can push the brake with the left side ball of my right foot and roll over so that the right edge of my foot can blip the throttle.

I'm a Finn living in Germany and since I've always loathed automatics (useless on the Autobahn and useless in the city, since the computer can never predict what _I_ want) I wanted mine with 6MT (it's a 530d). Everyone seems to want theirs with an auto box though and since I bought mine 2nd hand (and the car having stood for 6 months at BMW) I got it at a very decent price indeed. To me automatics lack involvement and BMW is all about involvement, right?

That's what the Manual mode is for. You can change the gears yourself when you want a more involved drive. I do this about 50% of my driving. Driving around town with traffic lights turns I'm usually in DS (sport mode) and in traffic jams I'm usually in D. When it's not in-town then I'm in Manual mode.

Isn't what you describe just a manually operated torque converter? A torque converter loses power/fuel, doesn't it, so why not go for a _true_ manual ?-)
Guten Rutsch!
