For some reason, drivers in Asian countries likes to put the gear into P when waiting for traffic light. I aso see a lot of taxi dirvers turn off head lights because it's saving the life of the bulb.

I heard somewhere that engaging Neutral at stops will damage your auto gearbox.? The same source advised that drive should always be engaged whether you're driving or stopped at a traffic junction.? Neutral is almost always never used?

So I'll put it in N and use the hand brake in long traffic lights.

[/quote]Seriously that is the ummm dumbest reason... you rather break your transmission than pop a bulb... umm ok suite yourself... stepping on the brake is not that hard.. and its not 15 min wait even in asian countries... I just visited 2 and I can tell you the lights are not that long. Taxi drivers drive me crazy I hate the way they drive... Automatic drivers like Mr. Hui pointed out put their car in Park at ever stop, put it in gear to move up 1 space when traffic creep up (you know how people like to creep up at lights) then put it back in Park again! Then there's those manual taxi drivers... they switch gears like under 1,500 rpms and lugging the engine thinking they're saving more gas...
Never a good idea to coast in neutral downhill, period.
BTW... the E60 will engine break for you going downhill instead of flapping loosly everywhere fishtailing all over the place in neutral then disrupting the balance of the car when the gearbox goes back into gear... (free flowing neutral then all of a sudden engine brake)

As already said, put it in D and go. Leave it there or use DS or M/S, but keep it in gear. Engine breaking is good, in gear gives you control for reacting to emergency or near emergency situations. NOw when u know for sure you will be not moving for some time then Park and engine off is OK. I do that at bridge openings (frequent here on the Space Coast) or major accidents on highways, when I know I'll be stopped for several minutes, but never in normal city driving. One car with 180,000 miles, heavy city driving, no auto tranny issues, no brake light bulbs replaced. Another auto tranny vehicle with 140,000 miles same thing.
Used to be on "conventional" automatic trannies, in neutral the ATF would not circulate but in park it would.
Putting it in park any time you are in traffic is a bonehead move, IMHO.
Ever see some jackass who feels the need to shift into park forget that his car is in reverse at a light and get the shock of his life when he hits the gas, only to move the opposite way from which he was expecting? Every time I see some idiot's reverse lights flash as they pass "R" on their way to "PARK" at a light, I want to smack them.
A car could be coming at you (no brakes, diabetic driver, etc etc etc) and you need to move NOW NOW NOW, not wait for your foot to hit the brake, get the trans out of park and into D and then foot onto the gas.
Your park pawl can wear out prematurely. This is what a "parking brake" is for. Put all of the weight of the car on the brake, and then put it into park, with the trans locked in park just in case the brakes fail.
If you are using "PARK" properly in conjunction with the parking brake, doesn'
t it strike you that PARK is not really intended for traffic situations?
Did it ever strike you that "PARK" is called "PARK" for a reason? You use it when you PARK. Meaning, not expecting to move the car for a while, leaving the vehicle, etc etc.

well, i don't know about all the asian countries but japan is different.? drivers turn off the headlights at traffic lights not because of saving the life of the bulbs but don't want to blind the oncoming traffic
