After an airbag fault message showed up, the dealership replaced the sensor pad and other parts and reprogrammed everything. Since that time, the airbag indicator is on any time the seat is empty. Very annoying at night! The manual says the light should come on on startup and then go out if the seat is empty and this is the way it worked prior to the repair. It is also the way my last two loaners have worked and my 2001 530 works. When I asked the dealership to fix it, they insist that if the seat is empty, the light should be on all the time. When I showed them the loaner, they told me that they'd put it in for service.

Welcome. My airbag indicator only comes on when my heavily loaded book bag is in the seat next to me. It tells me, more or less, that a body too small to have the air bag deploy is sitting in the seat and, therefore, that the bag is turned off.

Mine works like yours: On until somebody parks their buns in the seat. And, like you, I find it very annoying. It is Safety Nazi Upside-Down thinking to alert you to the obvious.

When I asked my service advisor if this was correct, he said that it was. I've got half a mind to get out my black electrical tape. The last time I employed it was the Low Fuel light on the instrument pod of my Moto Guzzi that comes on about half tank. There, I didn't get excited though, and those are just, well, Italian Electrics; they are supposed to do stupid things.

Cheers,
Ray Hull
