Thumbs up

I know what this button on the pics bellow is for. You can either operate it manualy or switch to "auto" mode. It closes the air intake for the cabin so you do not get to breath the outer pollution.

I'm just wondering how it works technicaly? I know there is some sensor, based on chemical analysis or something, if it detects some air pollution it closes the AC air intakes.....
But how it really works? What is the chemical formula to determine when to close and when open? For instance if you get a very very smelly 30 yrs old car blowing grey smoke infront of you will it close???

I think the sensor measures the presence of particulates. In my opinion, it works very well (and worked well in my E39s too.) Put it on auto and see if you ever notice smelling a diesel truck or bus in front of you. I only smell them in other cars...

Works like a charm on mine! But i dunno the technical stuff behind it. I'm curious also.

It works like a charm in our car too.. But sometimes it dosen't close until it's too late, if some old diesel truck are in front of you.

Okay, here's a quote of some technical information from TIS on what's going on...

Sensor for automatic air-recirculation control (IHKA High only)
The AUC sensor is installed at the top of the fan cowl. The sensor is exposed to the sideways downwind from the auxiliary fan. The AUC sensor detects the following pollutant emissions from spark-ignition and diesel engines:
  • Hydrocarbons (HC)
  • Carbon monoxide (CO)
  • Nitric oxides (nitrogen monoxide NO, nitrogen dioxide NO2)
Does that help?

Full document on the IHKA is here:

Keep in mind that it detects pollution, it doesn't detect bad smell.

If there's stinky garbage or some fart outside that don't contain the filtered pollutants, then you'll still smell it
