Automatic...they go on I think at or below 6 deg. C
It's a combination of temp, whether the rear screen heater is on etc.
It was posted here a couple of weeks back by a knowledgable member, try a search

I was under the impression that it would heat up if you turn on the heat of your steering wheel.

My Ride: 535d Sport, carbon black, media pack, visibility pack, grey leather, heated seats, sun protection glass, voice control, Eibach ProKit, 19" 166 style wheels, e-maps ECU remap to 325hp and 640NM, top speed limiter removed
They are not coupled to anything else than outside temperature. No heated rear screen, no front screen demister and no steering wheel.
They come on as soon you turn the key and the outside temp is below a certain degree, but even in 2 digit temp figure, I think, as they are also used to clear water off the mirrors.

Have been angry about this feature in some 6-7 Beemers now.
The night temperature can have been some -10 C but when I leave for work
at 9 - 10 am the temps can be 4 C and the mirrows are icy
The side mirrows start defrosting at +3 C and below.
They should absolutely also be activated by rear window defrost and/or steering heating.

The heated mirrors are activated as long as the key is in position 2.
Heated mirrors are individually controlled by the computer modules in each front door. The power applied is not uniform but controlled by software using the outside temperature as it is reported from the OBC. I have identified four degrees of heating depending on external temperature. The table below shows the ranges:
Temp Range % of Time
below -10C 100% (totally on)
-10C thru 0C 75%
0C thru 15C 50%
15C thru 25C 25%
above 25C 0% (totally off)
If you are unsure your mirrors are working the easiest test is:
1. Pry off the glass
2. Disconnect one of the wires on the mirrors
3. Connect an amp meter and watch the current draw based on temperature
If no current flows through then one fo the follows is true:
1. the external temperature is above 25C
2. the ignition key is not in position 2
3. the heating element in your mirror is broken

Great post E60M5E60
However, I have a stupid question. What is 'Position 2' for those of us with 'start buttons' not keys?
