you repair what is wrong and it won't come back on until the next time....

Which will be all too soon unfortunately.

did you try removing and replacing the fuel filler cap? Some SES lights are due to improper seal around the gas filler cap.

You need a OBDII scanner tool to find out what is causing the light to come on and go from there. The Scanner tool can reset the light but depending on what the problem is it will most likely come right back on until u fix whatever is causing it to come on. Could be a bad o2 sensor, etc. Just go to a local autozone and they can do a Free Scan for u and tell you whats causing the light to come on. Maybe you could ask whoever does the scan if they could reset it to see if it comes back on as well.

but good luck finding a place that will reset it. autozone workers and most shops are instructed not to reset the light due to legal and safety precautions. then again when the autozone worker comes outside to check your car out, giving him a $20 tip might help your cause

What good is reseting it if it does not fix the problem? 20 minutes later the light will be back on!

True. Go to Auto Zone find out what code is found by the reader, then figure out your options from there.

Don't bother resetting the light if the root problem has not been solved. Once the cause has been corrected, the light will clear itself after multiple restart/drive events. What this means is that if the gas cap was/is the problem and you replace or screw it on properly, the light will stay on for several days/restarts and you might think it had no effect.

So, get the code read, correct the problem(s). IMHO, the most common cause of the SES light is a vacuum leak related to the fuel tank system (yes, this also includes the gas cap). After that, it's the air pump which checks o2 sensor functionality/health. Next would be ignition coil related issues. Then, anyone's guess.

Dealer diagnosed my SES light (increased emissions) as the fuel tank breather valve and thermostat. I'm going to fix them myself and then see if the light goes out. I should save close to $400 bucks.
