I'm confused, I thought there was always a trunk/boot release button on the drive side. Maybe thats not the case in UK.

I think this was another US EU thing. US cars always had it EU cars started only later on.

In trhe US, the button is standard. Not so in the rest of the world. Pretty amazing, huh?

Personally, I always use the FOB to open the boot/trunk just before getting out (and before getting in). And, I do this everyday as I always carry my laptop bag (plus anything else there so as to not clutter the cabin or ruin the fine leather seats). Also, I have the button, but never use it. My $0.02...

I had an e39 which had the button above the bonnet/hood release, my e60 doesn't have the button but I can use the key fob to remotely open the boot/trunk, you can also open it manually outside with the release over the registration.

Off topic I know but
I had another e39 a few years back and the battery died, I couldn't open the car with either the key or the remote so I couldn't open the bonnet in orrder to junp start the car!
luckily I could open the boot with the key put a set of jump leads on the battery for a few seconds and remotely open the doors, crazy! it was like trying to get into forth knox

i have the hidden button between the no. plate lights but no button inside, and yes i have to remove the key from the ignition before i can open the boot

I think the press button above the lic. plate only works if ALL the doors are unlocked. So try pressing the unlock button in the center of the dash board and then the lic. plate push button to release the trunk (boot).

Russ,

Perhaps you should have gone for the E61, as the release button has been standard from the start, plus you can get more drugs in the back
