You might want to consider resale value, leather vs leatherette. Also, I don' think you can get premium Package without leather.

One thing that I really like about a car with leather is the smell - this always gives a car a really luxurious ambience.

I have a 530 with leatherette, black. I thought the black leatherette was more like leather in appearance than beige. I find the seats to be comfortable and very solid

I had a 525i with leatherette. The interior of the car always smelled like vinyl and was especially unpleasant from an olfactory standpoint in hot weather. The leather seats smell better, and because leather has more intrinsic stretch, also more comfortable. Worth the extra cost.

Just get leatherette unless he's really picky.

take the leatherette and your son should STILL be very glad he has a dad like you....

my first BMW (I had to buy it!) had the leatherette (blue!), and I was just so happy to have my first BMW that I could care less about the leather/leatherette discussion....

Other than the leather smell, i did not see any different. I had letherette on my preview 323i and people used to tell me...nice leather! oh well!
