Has anybody thought to compare a "before" and "after" list of these version numbers when upgrading their CIP version? That would go someways to tell if there is any meaning to these numbers we see.
I took pictures of my 5 screens of software versions as my "as delivered" baseline. Then as I get any CIP upgrades I will revisit these areas looking for any differences to see if anything has changed. This could also apply to any computer hardware, or other electronic repairs, replacements or upgrades.

My car was delivered for 3 weeks ago and I have the expectation that the car should been delivered with the newest CIP version they had and now I have got CIP version 12.

Why aren?t BMW delivering the cars with the newest software?
Are there anymore updates that I should ask my dealer for?

[/quote]Jannek,
no need to be frustrated.
BMW ALLWAYS loads the newest software on the cars when they build them.
I was not paying enough attention! Sorry!
Your screen is not showing the actual software number, you are in the submenu for "tuner test"...
I just noticed the 500 and thought CIP 12. But it is not showing the software version...

Clearly the number that is displayed on the screen in the pics has nothing to do with CIP version...

I also got the same I 03-05-500 vom 08.12.2004 result
My car is clearly manufactured 2005. I have the new M54 engine 2.5L
How do you explain this ? Is the soft ware ver 12 as Iceman suggests or is this method of checking your CIP all wrong?

Wrong! Only the dealer can tell you your exact software version!

530E60NL is correct. Although you can see some version numbers in the service screens, these relate in most cases to the actual firmware of the part in questionnnn, for example the iDrive screen itself may have firmware that is dated Dec 2004 even though it is fitted on a car that was physically months later on and has newer CIP software installed.
Sometimes, it is possible to deduce what CIP software a particular car has in it but the only foolproof method is to link the car up to the Diagnostics System at a dealership.
It should be said that as CIP version numbers increase and BMW "refine" their car software, there is a danger that other hardware components in the car may need to be upgraded in order for the new CIP software to function and for you to reap the benefits of the latest fixes etc..
For instance, the expected MP3 capability in the next CIP will require firmware in the CCC/MASK units to be a certain level. If a car has older firmware than what is necessary then there are 2 choices: 1) new features will not be visible/usable or 2) upgrade the out of date firmware which will probably cost money to do unless the new CIP software was loaded to fix a known defect and thus is covered under warranty.
