This may seem like a stupid question but I am not a car guru. How exactly is the dashboard illuminated ie the climate control knobs, the SOS button on the headliner, etc....Are these little amber lightbulbs or some kind of thin film that illuminates??

Recessed lamps or LEDs or fibre optics: Main gauges, green telltales, and door and overhead lamps etc, respectively. If you hold your hand up under the binnacle (gauge housing), you'll see where the indirect lighting lamps are located; been that way for about 20 years.

No sunscreen needed.
