Conventional wisdom would tell you that because fundamentally there is no difference from a Sat Nav DVD drive and a video DVD drive, that you would be able to play video DVDs in your Sat Nav drive. However in reality, it isn't that simple. Although the components are the same, the Sat Nav DVD drive you have in your BMW is lacking certain elements that let you play video DVDs. I have heard of kits that you can install to allow Sat Nav DVD drives to display video DVDs, but I don't know of anyone that has installed it. The best and most cost effective way for you to play DVDs is to add a separate in-car DVD player. This can go in the glove box, armrest bin, or the trunk if you go a DVD changer route. TV function is an option or a standard feature for the 5 series in many markets, so I don't think it would be hard to get the iDrive monitor to play video DVDs. Go visit a reputable in-car entertainment (A/V) shop and talk to them about your options. They would know the best way for you to go about your questions. BTW, the Sat Nav DVD drive plays audio! I know of many people that burn MP3 onto DVD and play the music through there Sat Nav DVD drive!
GL in your quest!

There are some guys on the Lexus Owners Club for the UK that have done what you are trying to do with their Lexus. Here's the link.

You might want to get in touch with them and they may be able to guide you to the right shops that do the conversion work. GL!
