i agree ... and depends on the need. For me ... I listen to the iphone quite a bit (while going to work ... etc), so I just want to load it once and use it everywhere. And having all songs available in one place is better than having hundreds of CDs ... (LOL ... I'm starting to sound like an apple commercial)
anyways ... I also checked out the iPod interface from the factory ... parts+labor is about $4600!! And once the iPod/iPhone is stored in the glove compartment ... you'll have no control of it except for the 5 preset playlists .. and iDrive might not support chinese writing ... I know mine doesn't.
so again .. really depends on what u need

As you mentioned i will need to visit dealer for the ECU reflesh in order to get the AUX work, so what should i tell them?
And does your original head unit play MP3? And the date of your car build? Am abit confused, as if its that easy to enable the ipod working in the idrive, why other members in the forum willing to spend $$$ on the Dension 500 kit?

that might be the price for just the parts? I was quoted $4600 installed ... but read my post about the shortcomings
u'll need some program to unlock the iDrive monitor, some shop near wanchai was quoting me about $5000 (they might be willing to go cheaper)
let me know if u want the shop address

1) Spec dock
2) AUX cable to connect the back of the head unit
3) Visit dealer and ask for refleshing
4) Go to Wan Chai ONLY if i want it plays the video
Is that right?

my factory head unit plays mp3, have to check on the build date tho. So my iphone is not "connected" to the iDrive, meaning I can't see the songs displayed on screen .... I connect through the aux option in the stereo ... I can only see "AUX" on the iDrive screen and sounds coming from the car's speakers. Its fine for me becuz w/ the spec.dock, I can see and control my iPhone.
I guess to simplify this, if u want iDrive to display songs from ur iPod/iPhone, there are 3 ways:
1) BMW iPod interface (no spec.dock)
2) Dension (can hook up to spec.dock)
3) That Wanchai shop to unlock ur IDrive monitor (can hook up to spec.dock)
hope me not confusing u

I guess if u r paying for the reflash ... u can tell them anything.... But if u get that aux wire and installation from the dealer, they might give u a deal. This guy @ chiwan BMW was helping me out on this so let me know if u want his number.

If i take the option 3 (Let say i wanna display songs in my idrive), what i will need do is to get the spec dock, AUX cable, reprogramme, and go to shop in Wan Chai to unlock
And
If i take you route (Which can play music in ipod but no display in idrive), what i will need to do is spec dock, AUX cable, and re-programme at the dealer.
Am i right this time?

thats right. Again tho once installed (steps 1-3)... the iDrive will only read "AUX" ... u'll need to control and read from ur iPod
As what you say, i dont mind doing the control via ipod as 5000HKD seems too much for unlocking the feature and dont worth it in my point of view.
Thank all you help and this definitely will be my next mod
