Actually. I do not mind at all the manual tranny. It became second nature as that's all I have been driving for most of my life! the e34 I am babying and keeping low miles on it <50k as a collectable (1 of < 200 made, 1 of 3 in Avus Blue/Black)

Do you have pics of the E34?

I used to drive manual in Indonesia, but when I came to USA, auto just becomes so convenient I don't really want to go back to manual for a daily driver.

This is pretty funny, when I was waiting for my 2004 545i which was delayed at the port for a recall, I was looking at an E39 M5 and everyone said to go for the 545, this thread seems to have reversed that opinion. If you need navigation, the one in the E39 was awful. I also like the iDrive in the E60.

other things to keep in mind:
early '04 e60 seem to have more electronic gremlins than later ones.
more performance mods are available for e39 m5 than e60 545.

I am more and more leaning towards the M5... . Now what if the 545i was also made to look like an M5 with OEM front fascia? (no badge upgrade.. still a 545i). with 31k miles... for the same price as a 2003 M5?
If you search beewang's post on this forum, I believe he states that moving from a 545 to an e39 M5 would be a step backwards. I think he keeps the M5 simply because it's a M. I don't think he posts on here anymore, so I thought I'd mention that.

Both nice cars, just depends on what you want.

-03 M5 likely out of warranty or soon to be out of warranty
-M5 is much faster, has a LSD
-How high do you value the M badge
-M5 is still a good looking car, but is dated. Interior is dated as well.
-e60 has modern styling and more toys inside if that's important
-There was mention of road feel, but then again, the M5 has the old school recirculating ball
-Not sure if it's important to you, but M owners tend to be more of an "enthusiast"

If you want a BMW for ~$50K, you can always get a 335i or a Z4 M roadster/coupe

Funny indeed. It looks like you end up with 49% vs 51% and it's becoming increasingly hard to dinstinguish the winning camp!

I don't know if it's recirculating ball or rack and pinion, but it has a completely different set-up from a E39 535i/540i, which were relatively sluggish. IIRC, the E39 M5 is 2 1/2 turns end-to-end, against 3 1/4 turns for the "common" E39 V8. And the level of assistance is also different.
